Setbacks and Kevin Smith

I stuck with the rotating diet for a good 16 weeks but then ended up in Los Angeles with no way to heat food (at least I had a fridge). With no real grocery nearby, it became very tough to keep up any sort of normal diet. It got worse when they moved me from Tarzana to Hollywood. And then, I was home and on vacation. Two weeks on the road with no way to control for time or type of food I was eating. When I came back, I weighed 344.2 pounds.

This was my new starting point. Lately, I have been seeing Kevin Smith do a lot of interviews for his new movie. He lost a massive amount of weight, and through multiple interviews, I was able to piece together how he did it. He basically fasts from 7pm to 1pm daily and then only eats a Vegan diet. Since he hates vegetables, he ends up skipping meals.

So, I decided to adopt an altered version of this approach. Keep the 1pm to 7pm dining window but try to eat vegetarian as much as possible. Also, cut sugar down to one day a week. Also, have, at most 6 sodas a week. Yes, there is a dice component to all this. I didn't tell anyone what I was doing but here are the results of one week of this:

Current Weight: 336. That is a 2.4% loss of weight.

Week 1 (and all weeks) represents an 86% drop in sugar consumption.

Week 1 also had 64% less meat, 79% less soda and 43% more water (probably more than that, I am drinking the shit out of some water).

This week, I do not expect as dramatic results as week 1 if only because my soda consumption doubled from 3 to 6 on the die roll. But still, 11 vegetarian meals should be good.

Period 5: Choose Your Own Adventure

Diet: Make one good choice per meal. I am interpreting this as say, skipping sugar in the morning by not having a cereal bar or Dr. Pepper with breakfast. Having water with a meal but eating whatever I want. Or replacing starches in a meal with a small salad. So, mainly sacrificing starches and sugars, we will see how this goes.

Results from Period 4: 342 lbs.

This represents a 1.4% drop in weight. I will take it. Not as drastic as the juice diet but pretty effective.

Period 4: Skip to the Loo

Period 4: August 7th to August 16th

Diet: Skip every other meal. Essentially, the same as last time but instead of averaging 2 meals a day, I am averaging 1.5.

Weight: 347 lbs.

Difference: .3% increase in weight. Not bad, more that I held steady instead of lost weight.

Success rate: 100%! I made "meal zones" for myself where breakfast was any meal before 11:30am, lunch was anything until 5:30pm and dinner was anything before I went to sleep. I tried to stick to the no snacking rule, which was mostly successful. I found out that days where I skip lunch were much harder than days where I skipped breakfast and dinner.

Period 3: The Fasting and the Furious

Period 3: July 28th, 2019 to August 4th, 2019

Diet: Intermittent Fasting. No food between 8pm and 12pm for 10 days.

Starting Weight: 346 lbs! The juicing seems to have worked.

Difference: 3.6% loss of weight. Not a bad start.

Success: 97% again. On one very horrible night that involved thunder storms, power outages and being stranded, I did not get to eat dinner until 8pm. This seems like the easiest one so far which explains the next results.

Period 2: The Juice is Loose

Period 2: July 18th, 2019 to July 27th, 2019.

Starting Weight: 359 lbs (in the words of my cousin, woo, big boy)

Difference: Unknown

The Diet: At first, I started this as a liquid diet. I bought all sorts of broth and bullion and shit. After two days, I felt like hell. My head was killing me, I had no energy, and my hunger was reaching epic proportions. So, after only 17% completion, I switched the idea to replacing one meal a day with a fruit or veggie smoothie. I made my own and I bought from local chains but I was able to keep it up the rest of the time.

Completion: 17% if you count the liquid diet, 100% if you count having at least one meal a day replaced by a smoothie.

Period 1: Salad Days

So, here are the ground rules. I put the numbers 1-35 in a bag. Two of my friends draw numbers on the last night of my 10 day cycle. I choose which of the 2 diets I think I can handle for the next ten days and go with that one. On the first day of each cycle, I weigh myself. It is that simple.

Cycle 1 July 8th, 2019 to July 17th, 2019.

Starting Weight: Unknown (had to order a special scale for people over 300 lbs).

The Diet: This one was pretty simple, replace one meal a day with a salad. I almost always picked spinach salad because that tastes the best to me. The toppings didn't matter, just that I was eating roughage every day.

Success Rate: 97%. One night I had to work late and the salad I planned for dinner became a box of popcorn at a movie theater.

Welcome to the Index

This past year, I have found myself heavier than I have ever been in my life. This is not acceptable. When I see myself in a full-length mirror, I am perfectly round. I have tried diets and exercise but I discovered something, I can't stick to a plan for more than 10 days. Therefore, I have decided to let my body have it the way it wants it. I have come up with 35 different diet plans that should last 10 days each. Each post will be about my diet plan for that period and the resulting weight loss or gain. Let's start.
